There’s a particular kind of day that doesn’t announce itself as different while it’s happening. It looks like any other day, right up until it isn’t one anymore. For me, one such day involved a serious medical emergency that left me with a traumatic brain injury and a recovery that reshaped everything that came after it. I’m not going to walk back through what happened. That account already exists, told in full and with the care it deserves, in “Healing Against the Odds.” What I want to sit with here is something different: what it means for a single day to become a hinge point at all.
Why It Became a Beginning, Not Just an Ending
A hinge point is a strange kind of marker. It isn’t only an ending, even though something real and significant does end there. It’s also, somehow, a beginning — the place where an entirely different chapter starts, one that couldn’t have existed without the door the ending closed behind it.
I don’t say that to rush toward some neat redemptive frame, the kind where the hard thing gets repackaged as a hidden gift before enough time has actually passed to know if that’s even true. It wasn’t a gift. It was a genuine loss, with consequences that are still part of my daily life. But it was also, unmistakably, a beginning — the specific point after which I started paying attention to my own life differently, valuing time differently, eventually finding my way toward writing about all of it honestly instead of managing it quietly the way I always had before.
Both of those things are true at once. The ending doesn’t get smaller to make room for the beginning, and the beginning doesn’t erase what the ending actually cost. A hinge point holds both without resolving the tension between them, and I’ve come to think that’s exactly what makes it a hinge point rather than just a bad day that happened to be followed by a better one.
What a Hinge Point Reorganizes
Here’s the part that took me longer to understand: a genuine hinge point doesn’t only open a door forward. It reaches backward too, and quietly reorganizes how you read everything that came before it.
You can’t recognize a hinge point while you’re standing on it. You can usually only see it as one from some distance afterward, once enough time has passed to notice that everything since has been oriented around it.
Years that once seemed like one kind of story — ordinary, unremarkable, simply the accumulation of days — can look different once you know what they were building toward, even though nothing about those years themselves has actually changed. The reorganizing isn’t dishonest. It isn’t rewriting history to make it more flattering. It’s closer to finally being able to see a shape that was always there, just not visible yet from inside it.
That’s part of what makes a hinge point different from an ordinary setback. A setback stays contained to its own moment. A hinge point doesn’t stay contained anywhere. It reaches in both directions at once.
Where This Leaves You
If you have a day like this in your own life — a before and after that you can point to with precision, that changed the shape of everything that came next — you don’t have to rush toward finding the silver lining, and you don’t have to pretend the cost wasn’t real in order to acknowledge that something did eventually grow from it. Both can be true. They usually are. I’ve written more about the difference between cure and healing — the reframe this whole hinge point eventually led me toward — in What “Healing Against the Odds” Actually Means.
